Tenancy training for community workers

scene of houses, trees and people with a 'for rent' sign

The Tenants' Union of NSW offers professional development training for community sector workers, including youth support workers, student support officers, disability advocates and migrant support workers. The workshops we offer are aimed at two different levels:

Renting First Aid

This practical 1-Day workshop helps workers support new renters or people new to renting in New South Wales. This workshop focusses on residential tenancies, so does not cover crisis accommodation, student accommodation, home stays or boarding houses. You'll learn how to:

  • Help a client get ready to rent
  • Figure out the types of accommodation that could suit
  • Know what to look for in an inspection
  • Spot renting red flags
  • Understand a tenancy agreement
  • Fill out condition report thoroughly
  • Understand tenancy rights and responsibilities
  • Work through problems
  • Know where to turn for extra help

Tenancy Law for Non-Lawyers

This 1-Day workshop equips professionals with a working understanding of relevant tenancy legislation and dispute resolution mechanisms. The workshop covers:

  • Overview of the Residential Tenancies Act
  • Residential tenancy agreement
  • Bond
  • Rights and responsibilities
  • Introduction to Tenancy Advice and Advocacy Services (TAAS)
  • Social Housing
  • DCJ Housing
  • Tenancy databases
  • Other types of tenancies
