The Tenants' Union Policy and Campaigns Officer takes a lead coordinating and supporting collaboration in campaign work to make a positive and practical difference in the lives of people who rent their homes. The role involves a range of policy and advocacy work relating to campaigns, including relationship building and collaboration with members, renters and other stakeholders; research, report, submission and article writing on key issues identified as campaign priorities; and where appropriate representing the Tenants’ Union in external forums that provide an opportunity to influence outcomes for renters in key policy areas.

Rental Bond Exit Survey launched

In NSW we know a lot about how tenancies begin – there are lots of statistics and articles on rents at the beginning. But there's very little on how tenancies end. No government body in Australia is tracking how or why tenancies end – but in NSW we're taking the first step to get this information. From this week when you finalise your bond, look out for an email asking you to participate in a survey about the bond. We encourage all tenants to fill out this survey – it is a great opportunity to get new evidence about the way our renting system works at the end of tenancies.

This is the initial response from Tenants' Union of NSW, resourcing body for 19 NSW-based Tenancy Advice and Advocacy Services, to the release of funding agreements from 2019-2022 for NSW Government funding for the Tenants Advice and Advocacy Program. We welcome the continued funding of tenancy services. Renters in NSW need and appreciate the services they receive from TAASs. However, we estimate 1 in 3 seeking assistance are missing out. It makes no sense that funding isn’t increased when we know there is interest available from renters' own money in the Rental Bond Board and Property Services account.

New Tenancy Law Regulations – have your say

The Residential Tenancies Amendment (Review) Act 2018 passed late last year – containing a number of positive changes, and some shortcomings. Regulations are currently being drafted; we encourage you to have your say via the Fair Trading website (before 2nd August).
