COVID-19 service update: Tenant Advocates are working remotely to keep our advice service operating. When you call our Service you will be asked to leave a voicemail identifying your name, suburb, phone number, whether your matter is urgent or not and short description of the issue. We try to return all calls within 24 - 72 hours. Alternatively on our website you can submit an online enquiry and we will get in contact. When we call you we will be calling from a private number.

Inner West Tenants' Advice and Advocacy Service (IWTAAS) gives free telephone advice to tenants on their rights and responsibilities. After identifying the nature of your tenancy issue we will ask you to leave your name, suburb and telephone number and a tenant advocate will call you back. We try to return all calls within 24 - 48 hours, however calls from boarders and lodgers will be taken immediately whenever possible. Our services are available to renters in the local government areas of Ashfield, Burwood, Canada Bay, Marrickville, and Strathfield. Please note that we do not give advice to landlords.

IWTAAS also provides legal education sessions and lobbies for law reform to help tenants. In particular we want greater protection for people who live as boarders or lodgers, who are some of our communities' most vulnerable people.

From Wednesday 15th April the NSW Evictions Moratorium came into effect. So there is a stop on evictions, at least for 60 days – but not on all evictions and not for all people. Tenant Advocates are hard at work all across NSW – making sure tenants know their rights, so we can keep on building good homes and communities. Here are some of the recent examples of the work of our Network, from stalls in the community, to our Network Conference, to winning compensation for tenants, to resisting unfair evications, and helping tenants who are facing mutiple disadvantage.

There were sessions on the new domestic violence tenancy laws, the 'pay to stay' principle in relation to rent arrears, electricity in land lease communities, the NDIS, social housing transfers, and much more.

Tenants demand action on ‘no grounds’ evictions – new report released

The Tenants’ Union of NSW with Marrickville Legal Centre has released the findings of a new report exploring the impacts of no grounds evictions. Just over three quarters (77%) of renters have held back from asserting a right or reporting a problem because they worried about receiving a ‘no grounds’ eviction.
