Energy efficiency rental standards – renters have your say!

05/05/2026

The consultation on minimum energy efficiency rental standards is now open.

The NSW Government has opened a consultation investigating Minimum Energy Efficiency Rental Standards (MEERS).

The introduction of a minimum energy efficiency rental standards would set out mandatory requirements that rental homes must meet.

The government has done its own investigation of the issues renters face in regards to living in energy inefficient homes and released a consultation paper describing the challenges faced by renters. The paper also outlines possible minimum energy efficiency rental standards solutions and describes examples of solutions already in place in other areas of Australia and the World.

The consultation is open until 31 May.

This consultation is a valuable opportunity for the 1 in 3 people in NSW who rent their homes — and anyone else interested in making renting fairer — to have a say on the changes needed to lift the quality of rental homes and make them safer, more comfortable, healthier and cheaper to run.

We have developed several resources for renters and other interested members of the community, which can help you with your contributions to the consultation.
