Offer to pay rent arrears

Note: tenancy law changed on 23rd March 2020. All our factsheets are up to date, but sample letters are still under review.

You can send this sample letter to your landlord when you have fallen into rent arrears, and would like to enter into a payment plan to pay off the rent arrears. If you have not received a notice of termination you can still send the letter but you will need to adjust the text.

Cut and paste the template letter below or download a copy from the link above. Remember to substitute your details for the details contained in [square brackets].

Dear …

Re: Payment of rent arrears at [your address]

I am aware that I am currently in $[amount] of rent arrears at the above premises and am in receipt of your termination notice.

I propose to pay these arrears off at $[amount] [per week/fortnight] on top of my usual rent. I will continue paying this extra amount until the rent arrears are paid off.

In good faith, I enclose a cheque for this amount as the first payment. [Delete if not applicable]

If this is acceptable to you I ask that you confirm this in writing with me and inform the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal that a hearing is no longer required.

If you would like to discuss this further please contact me on [phone number].

Yours sincerely

[T Tenant]
