ABOUT

LOCKDOWN update: The Western Sydney Tenants' Service (WESTS) is operating remotely during the Lockdown period. We will continue to deliver our excellent service to the Western Sydney community whilst in lockdown. Our offices are currently closed, but we strongly encourage our clients to continue contacting us online and via phone.

WESTS provides free tenancy advice, referrals, advocacy and in some cases representation for residential tenants at the Tribunal. We run regular community information sessions on tenancy issues. Our services are focused but not limited to tenants from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds; who are low-income earners; living in social housing; who suffer isolation; and/or who have disabilities. Our services are available to renters living in Sydney's west, from Parramatta to Mount Druitt, from Rooty Hill to Windsor. Please note, we do not offer advice on tenancy issues to landlords or real estate agents.

During busy peaks throughout the day our service will operate as a call back service. Leave a single voice message with your name and best contact number or press "Contact Online" to be redirected to our Online Intake Form. If you are a caseworker, social worker, medical/health officer, or legal officer wishing to refer a client to our service, please email us at tenancy@wsclc.org.au with your client's details and enquiry.

Some of you may have lost your rental accommodation to the fires or may have had your accommodation damaged. Q+A: Water restrictions, drought and rental bond

"The agent is demanding all of my bond to pay for turf and lawn work. The lawn is not what it was at the beginning of the tenancy. But, we are in drought and there are water restrictions. It does not seem fair that I have to pay for turf etc when the lawn would probably have died anyway. Where do I stand? What can I do?"

Tenant Advocates come together for Network Meeting

Tenant Advocates at the Network Meeting
Tenant Advocates from across New South Wales recently came together for another successful Network Meeting organised by the Tenants' Union. There were sessions on the new domestic violence tenancy laws, the 'pay to stay' principle in relation to rent arrears, electricity in land lease communities, the NDIS, social housing transfers, and much more.

‘Ending homelessness together’: Tenancy team reaches out to the community for Homelessness Week

In order to raise awareness about homelessness, the WSCLC tenancy team WESTS ran a stall in Centenary Square, Parramatta for Homelessness Week on August 6. Tenant Advocates Miriam, Rachael, Fern, Ivana, and Program Coordinator, Franya, were the forces behind the stall on the day. The team handed out an excess 200 showbags, which included information about WSCLC’s services and critical material on tenants’ rights.

WESTS can be proud to have reached this milestone knowing that they have helped many thousands of renters over the years – last year alone they assisted over 3,000 new clients.
