Renting & transphobia: NSW renting laws that need to change to support transgender renters Riley Brooke Sun, 28/05/2023 - 22:33

Sydney recently hosted World Pride – a global celebration of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer, Intersex, Asexual (and more) community. In early 2023 NSW saw an influx of LGBTQIA+ people from all around the world, to come together for arts, sports, parties, and a Human Rights Conference.

Unfortunately, this has come at a time when the LGBTQIA+ community, and transgender people in particular, have been experiencing escalating levels of discrimination and outright violence, both here in Australia and overseas.

In emergency break glass: we need to act urgently to address the rental housing crisis

“How bad is the housing crisis at the moment?”

Almost everyday for the last few months the Tenants’ Union has received calls or emails from journalists asking us to talk about the rental crisis and its impact on people’s lives. They ask, “How bad is it? Is this the worst you’ve seen?” I’ve been working at the Tenants’ Union for over 10 years. When I started we were already talking about a crisis. Rents were unaffordable, competition for rentals often fierce, and renters faced significant insecurity making it very hard to ask for basic things like repairs.

Tenants' Union at the Community Sector Blueprint launch

Leo Patterson Ross • 31/03/2023

Recently, the Tenants' Union of NSW attended the Community Sector Blueprint launch hosted by the Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS). The event focused on how the Blueprint is a necessary resource for providing a clear idea of what a good national framework for renters could look like.

The Tenants' Union was joined by Healthy Homes For Renters, the Public Interest Advocacy Centre, the Energy Efficiency Council, and Better Renting.

To find out more about the Blueprint, watch the video below.

Privacy in renting

We’ve all seen the lines of people outside properties listed for rent. Many renters are struggling to find and secure a new rental home. In the context of a highly competitive market, landlords and their agents are asking for more personal information than ever before during the application process. And renters very often don’t feel they can refuse these requests.

NSW commits to banning 'no grounds' during periodic tenancies

Today the NSW Liberals and Nationals joined NSW Labor and the NSW Greens and committed to ending 'no grounds' evictions for periodic (or rolling) tenancies. This means we really have a never-before-seen consensus on the principle that rented homes need to be stable homes, and that a modern tenancy system would support this.

NSW Renters' Election 2023

More renters than ever will vote 25 March

More renters will head to the polling booths for the NSW State Election on 25 March than ever before. According to the 2021 Census around 30% of people in NSW rent their home. 55% of all renting households are families with children (either couples with children, or single parents with children), and just over a quarter of a million are renters over the age of 60. Around 6% of renters are Aboriginal, and more than a third (35.6%) speak a language other than English at home.
