The phone lines are operating during the current natural disaster in the Northern Rivers. Contact the service on (02) 6621 1022 or 1800 649 135 or complete the online intake form if you require advice. If your call goes to message bank, please leave a message and someone will call you back as soon as possible.

Please note: in the circumstance of staff shortage, the service may refer your matter to another Tenants Advice Service in the state. If your call goes to message bank, please let us know if you consent to your details to be referred to another Tenants Advice Service.

The Northern Rivers Tenants Advice & Advocacy Service (NORTAAS) provides free advice and referral for all tenants and residential parks residents in the NSW Northern Rivers. Our services are available to renters from Tweed Heads to Grafton and west to Drake.

NORTAAS is a program of Northern Rivers Community Legal Centre.

Forging Ahead – Tenant Advocates Conference 2021

TAAS Conference 2021
In October 2021, around 100 Tenant Advocates from across NSW came together online for our annual Tenants Advice and Advocacy Services Conference, under the theme 'Forging Ahead'. It was a great opportunity for Tenant Advocates to hear from each other about the issues faced by different renters, and to learn, discuss and innovate in our practice. A main focus of the Conference this year was the huge challenges faced by renters due to COVID and the ongoing housing crisis, as well as how we can forge ahead and continue to improve.

Staying Connected – TAAS Conference 2020

Last week, over 100 Tenant Advocates participated in our first online Tenants Advice and Advocacy Services Conference. We explored a range of topics, including changes to tenancy laws, policy reform, and advocate work practice. We looked in detail at the effects COVID-19 has had on tenants lives, the Tribunal’s practices, tenancy law, and mental health.

Advocating for independent living

Recently, the Northern Rivers Tenants' Advice and Advocacy Service was able to assist a tenant to maintain her independent living. The tenant lives in social housing, in a modest three bedroom home where she has lived all her life, in a country town. She has a severe visual impairment, and until recently was cared for by her mother. Sadly, her mother passed away not long ago. Her mother held the tenancy, so when she died, our client was given a six month fixed term agreement, while her eligibility for social housing was assessed.
