COVID-19 service update: Tenant Advocates are working remotely to keep our advice service operating. SSTAAS advice line hours have been extended to Monday to Friday between 10am-2pm and 3pm-5pm. For online Tribunal hearings, our Tenant Advocates may be available to provide you duty advocacy service during your appointment. Please contact 02 9789 3744 and check for availability.

Southern Sydney Tenants Advice and Advocacy Service (SSTAAS) provides free telephone information, advice and assistance to private and public housing tenants. We can help by talking to, or writing to landlords and real estate agents. We also assist tenants to prepare for Tribunal hearings and can provide representation at the Tribunal for highly disadvantaged tenants. This is usually limited to matters involving terminations or illegal lockouts.

Our services are available to renters in houses, units, caravan parks, retirement villages and boarding houses in the Bankstown, Canterbury, Hurstville, Kogarah, Rockdale and Sutherland local government areas. Please note that we do not assist landlords or real estate agents. SSTAAS also assists tenants through community education sessions on tenancy laws.

Rita Wilkinson is the Tenancy and Financial Inclusion Manager at Metro Assist, and the Coordinator of the Southern Sydney Tenants' Advice and Advocacy Service. Make Renting Fair gains momentum

Make Renting Fair campaigners and supporters in Redfern
In NSW current tenancy legislation allows landlords in the private market to end a tenancy without having to give a reason. This means renters are often scared to enforce their rights because they know they can get kicked out for things like asking for repairs or challenging an excessive rent increase. Make Renting Fair is a community campaign calling for law reform to end these unfair evictions. Support for the Make Renting Fair campaign continues to grow.

Bringing together a strong coalition of local community organisations, unions, and faith based organisations, the Tenants Union of NSW and Tenants Advice and Advocacy Services are calling on the NSW State Government to make renting fair, and ensure renters in New South Wales are protected against unfair evictions.

The Granny Flat Trap

Over the past six months the Southern Sydney Tenants' Advice and Advocacy Service at Metro Assist has seen a steady influx of problems with granny flats. There can be hidden traps when renting granny flats. Firstly, if the granny flat is on the same electricity meter as the house, or there are two granny flats that share a meter, then the electricity bill should be in the name of the landlord, not the tenant.
