ABOUT

COVID-19 service update: Tenant Advocates are working remotely to keep our advice service operating. You can still reach us on (02) 9386 9147, or make an online enquiry. There may be increased wait times for a call back, however if you leave a voicemail or an online enquiry someone will get back to you. Please try to avoid leaving multiple messages as this may delay us further.

During this period we will not be attending the Tribunal or doing community outreach. If you have a Tribunal hearing and require advice on the day, there will be numbers provided where you can directly contact a tenant advocate.

Eastern Area Tenants Service (EATS) offers free advice, information and help to tenants who are having problems with their landlords or real estate agents. We are funded by NSW Fair Trading. Most of our funds come from the interest earned on tenant's bonds. EATS helps tenants in private rental and public housing. We also help boarders and lodgers. Our services are available to renters in the Waverley, Woollahra and Randwick council areas in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs. We are not able to help landlords or head tenants in a dispute with a sub-tenant or lodger.

We can accept requests for advice via our website – click on the 'get help' icon at eats.org.au.

Make Renting Fair is a community campaign calling for law reform to end these unfair evictions. Support for the Make Renting Fair campaign continues to grow.

It's tough being a 'protected tenant'

Broken roof
A succession of landlords all flatly refused to do repairs on this protected premises. Water had been pouring through the ceiling just inside the front door for months.
We spoke with John, a protected tenant who has been living in his home in Randwick since 1978. We asked him about his experience in a protected tenancy and the ongoing issues he has faced around repairs. Recently the original landlord who John had entered into his tenancy with sold the building. The new owner tried unsuccessfully to evict John. John attributes his success in fighting the eviction in large part to the excellent support he received from a local tenant advocate from the Eastern Area Tenants Advice Service.
