ABOUT

Greater Sydney Aboriginal Tenants Service (GSATS) assists and advocates with telephone advice, letters of support, attending the Tribunal, mediation and advocacy, Housing Appeals Committee applications, repairs and maintenance issues, helping to find services who can assist with other issues, attending meetings with your landlord (including Housing NSW), and negotiating with landlords. We also provide Community Education and Duty Advocacy.

Our services are available to Aboriginal renters in greater metropolitan Sydney.

We can also provide face-to-face outreach services (we will come to you), subject to availability.

This is a specialist Aboriginal Service. Non-Aboriginal tenants please contact your local tenants' service.

Tenant Advocates at the Network Meeting
Tenant Advocates are hard at work all across NSW – making sure tenants know their rights, so we can keep on building good homes and communities. Here are some of the recent examples of the work of our Network, from stalls in the community, to our Network Conference, to winning compensation for tenants, to resisting unfair evications, and helping tenants who are facing mutiple disadvantage.

Tenant Advocates at the Network Meeting
Tenant Advocates from across New South Wales recently came together for another successful Network Meeting organised by the Tenants' Union. There were sessions on the new domestic violence tenancy laws, the 'pay to stay' principle in relation to rent arrears, electricity in land lease communities, the NDIS, social housing transfers, and much more.

Survey for Aboriginal Renters

The Tenants Union of NSW and the Aboriginal Tenancy Services are currently working on an Aboriginal Renting Policy Platform. This document will be used to strengthen the voices of Aboriginal people who rent regardless of who your landlord may be. We want to gather as many views from Aboriginal people as possible. Last week, Tenant Advocates came together for the Tenants’ Advice and Advocacy Services (TAAS) Network meeting. Around 60 Advocates participated in the meeting over two days, representing almost all TAASs from across New South Wales.

Carol
Carol Carter, Bankstown tenant, with Lorelle Corderoy, Tenant Advocate
Carol Carter is an Aboriginal woman living in public housing in Bankstown in Sydney. In September 2014, Carol received a letter from the Department of Housing in relation to relocating her to another house because of redevelopment happening at the place she currently lives. Carol has lived at her current home for over 14 years. Carol has been receiving help from Greater Sydney Aboriginal Tenants Service (GSATS).
